Laboratory

Water Resources Engineering is evolving as a multidisciplinary team dedicated to studying various aspects of water and water systems, from natural hydrological cycles to hydraulics, urban solutions, water quality, and socioeconomic impacts.

Our laboratory embodies the enthusiasm of several research groups within the division and is equipped to measure and analyze both the qualitative and quantitative properties of water, as well as its effects on environments and systems.

Equipment

Our inventory can be categorized according to various research needs:

Coastal Engineering

The equipment is designated for field measurements and testing, utilizing a range of specialized instruments and setups, including:

  • RTK-GPS (NCGEO-S4).
  • USV with single-echo beam – (Apache 4).
  • Rubber dinge (3m) with electric motor.
  • 6 pressure sensors for wave measurements (RBRvirtuoso D|16 Wave).
  • UAV (DJI Mavic 3 pro).
  • 2 Surface acceleration buoys (Obscape WaveDroid Block III).

Surface and subsurface water (general)

Materials and instruments are used for measuring flow, stratification, and saturation. These include:

  • Turbo-Prop Open-Channel Flowmeter, 5' to 15' handle length. 0,3 to 19,9 ft/second (Avantor Fluid Handling).
  • Portable sonars for bathymetry and mapping.
  • IoT based moisture sensors and loggers.

Controlled Environments

  • Climatic chamber (x4) (POL-EKO KK 750 TOP+): illumination (UV-LED), temperature (0…60°C) and relative humidity control.
  • Box Furnace (Thermo Scientific): temperature (0…250°C).
  • Freezer (Bosch) (x3): temperature (-40…-5°C).

Water Quality (general)

  • UV VIS spectrophotometer (HACH DR3900) and accessories (method specific).
  • OxiTop system (BOD).
  • pH and conductivity meters.
  • Etc.

General chemistry lab

Fume hoods, micropipettes, scales, and miscellaneous labware are available for work with chemicals and materials. Please note that restrictions may apply based on varying hazard risks (e.g., flammable substances, biological materials, etc.).

UV Lab

Materials and experimental setup for water treatment tests and measurements of UV in solutes.

Typical customers/users

Students, researchers, industry and authorities interested in the above instruments and resources.

Fees

Information about the lab fees and lab access is available upon request, depending on the equipment and assistance needed and duration of the testing.

User skill requirements

Due to the diversity of jobs and tasks conducted, knowledge of basic chemical safety is mandatory for all users. An introduction to the equipment can be provided when necessary. Staff members are available to assist based on task requirements, and certain equipment must be operated by our staff.

Insurance and safety

The instruments in our lab are sensitive and expensive; therefore, we require all users to have their own insurance. Users must submit a job or project application via the application form available at (link TBA). The form also includes a detailed description of regulations and procedures. Each job or project must be assigned a Principal Investigator (PI).
